Making a good start is crucial to make the most of our workday. The very first hours of the day strongly influence our daily productivity, our ability to take forward the main part, as well as our availability for the rest of the day. It is thus essential not to miss this step. Then, how to make sure to make a good start ?
Here are 6 best practices to keep the upper hand :
1- Recharge your energy
It may be a cliché but you should not underestimate the impact of your health on your effectiveness, especially at the beginning of the day. To be able to start like a rocket, you’d better be in good shape !
Rule #1 : Get enough sleep. It is advisable to sleep at least 8 hours a night to take advantage of all your physical but also mental abilities (in terms of memory and speed of reasoning in particular).
Rule #2 : Have a healthy breakfast. Food acts on your energy just as much as sleep does, and on this matter, the first meal of the day is considered by experts as the most important one.
Rule #3 : Take it easy. Mind directly impacts productivity, it sets motivation and enthusiasm to accomplish your work. So, do yourself a favor and adopt a “positive attitude” 🙂
2- Start early
It is well known that “the early bird catches the worm”. Indeed, starting your day early has many benefits.
First of all, it allows you to work in peace, before the arrival of colleagues or the call of first customers, and thereby preserve your concentration avoiding being interrupted. Besides, it is the opportunity to take a step ahead on the start of your business, the start of your customers, partners and competitors, and thus be better informed and prepared for the rest of the day. Finally, and probably most important, by beginning earlier you take full advantage of the first hours of the day that are, according to numerous studies, the period during which we are the most effective.
So, if possible, do not hesitate to start your workday early, you will work better and finish earlier too 😉
3- Begin with the most important and most demanding task
If there was one rule to keep in terms of efficiency, it would be this one: prioritize ! Make sure to take forward what is most important to you and this, from the beginning of the day.
It is essential to dedicate your first hours to the main part because requests will inevitably accumulate throughout the day and divert you from your priorities.
In doing so, do not hesitate to focus on the most complex tasks since you will benefit during this period from the best of your abilities.
So, choose with great care your first task of the day and pay attention not to mistake urgency for importance…
4- Postpone the processing of your emails and other requests at late morning
As mentioned above, the first hours of the day are very precious since they strongly influence the success of your entire day, so protect them ! For that purpose, do not let you interrupted by innumerable emails, inconvenient calls, talkative colleagues,… you have to resist them.
The best solution is to keep your mailbox closed until a certain time, as if you were in a meeting. Choose for instance the late morning in order to make sure to take forward enough the main part without running the risk of running out of time in case of emergency. The same goes for requests : take note but politely postpone their processing later in the day.
It would be such a pity to annihilate all your efforts to make a good start because of an external event. Take care to secure this key moment.
5- Organize your day the day before
To be able to start the day correctly and quickly, it is necessary to prepare it in advance. Therefore, simply plan the day before the tasks you want to achieve.
By late afternoon, update your priorities and select 2 or 3 of them for the next day, no more. Then, estimate the time required to complete these tasks and choose the right order to do them. As mentioned previously, place first the important task that requires most concentration. And finally, set an achievable goal for the end of the morning to make sure to start your day at full speed !
By doing so, not only will you save valuable time by starting your day immediately, but you will also free your mind the night before. Double bonus !
6- Make your start a ritual
Once you feel comfortable with the recharging of your energy, the early start, the choice of the first task, the preparation the day before… reproduce the same sequence every day as if it was a ritual. Little by little, you will get the rhythm and follow the planned program in an ‘automatic’ way.
By establishing habits, you will be more serene every morning knowing what to do and how to make a good start, you will also better resist the risk of procrastination, and you will gradually optimize this first step that is so decisive for the success of your workday !
