According to some people, work is good for health and well-being. Certainly… but at this price I would be fine to be more often sick ;). Whatever our activity, our interest for it and our sense of responsibility, work remains work. But whatever we think of it, sooner or later we will have to get back to work even after such pleasant holidays. Thus, how to make a success of this comeback and recover the rhythm of work effectively and without pain ?
Here are 5 tips to help you to make a fresh start :
1- Bring a part of your vacation with you
It would be a shame to end those weeks of happiness without preserving anything from them. Take care of keeping the best of what you have experienced, both for yourself and for the others. Remain enthusiastic and keep your good mood, it fits you so well and your colleagues will remember it. Besides, take the drama out of the situation : after having enjoyed your vacation so much, you may finally deserve to work ;). Feel free to share with your colleagues what made the flavor of these good moments : meetings, discoveries, thrills, … Also, do not lose your good habits that contribute to your well-being : getting enough sleep, exercising, having a balanced diet,… It will allow you to benefit longer from this privileged period.
2- Restart smoothly
To prevent a breakdown, you would better get back to work gradually. Plan a start-up period during the first 2-3 days of resumption. During this time, avoid at all costs important appointments, complicated calls or strategic meetings, it is too early. Opt rather for simple tasks such as browsing your 500 emails, a task you will unfortunately not be able to avoid :(. Take also the opportunity to spend time with your colleagues in order to reconnect with them. And consider treating carefully your loved ones who suddenly do not see you anymore : be sure to come home early, make some phone calls during the day to show you care,… By doing so, you and those around you will live the return to work far more serenely.
3- Take the opportunity to step back
One of the main advantages of getting back to work is that you reconnect with work without being already too busy, especially if you are running a start-up period. So do not miss this rare opportunity to take stock of the situation. Look back and review the period before your holidays. Think retrospectively of what worked well or less well. Then, choose what you would most like to keep up or rather to change. The purpose of this operation is quite simple but often overlooked : capitalize on your own experience to make progress and get the best start possible.
4- Organize the new stage
After having reviewed your activity, you just need to prepare the step ahead. First of all, define your main goals, including those you want to reach at the end of this new working period. Stay focus on the main part not to end with an unrealistic list… Now that you perceive your ambition more clearly, sort out your priorities by trying again not to load you too much. Then, schedule the main actions that you wish to perform in short and medium term to achieve your goals. Done ? Perfect, you are ready to make a brand new start in the right direction !
5- Do not forget to have fun
To accept resumption more easily, you should not hesitate to multiply opportunities to unwind. Think firstly of taking care of yourself by keeping some spare time to go out, get a breath of fresh air, educate or distract yourself,… Similarly, program some friendly moments with your colleagues as well as with your family. Plan for example a night outing, a refreshing hike, a sports session,… Finally, and because it is never too early to get organized, do yourself a favor and prepare already your next vacation ! 🙂
